Elizabeth Bowers Rice (Choi2All School Owner, Roswell, GA)

I have heard it said before that life begins at 40.  Well, it certainly has for me.   At age 40 I decided to join Choi Kwang Do for several reasons.  At first, I must admit I was very skeptical, not of the Martial Art itself, but of my own ability to succeed in this endeavor.  You see, I had completely lost my self-confidence over many years due to several reasons, the biggest of which was a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.  What a blow a diagnosis of MS is to someone who was always considered to be a proficient athlete in school and always used to being a very healthy individual.

I can only say that it must have been fate or destiny that Jennifer Riis-Poulsen entered my life, and what an incredible ambassador for Choi Kwang Do she is and continues to be!  She kept telling me over and over again that I should try this Martial Art called Choi Kwang Do, that she would instruct me, that it would be excellent for my general health, my self-esteem and that it would help my MS. I had been substitute teaching at the local elementary school but I was finding it more and more difficult to be on my feet all day. I felt my health was deteriorating but did not say anything to others.  The combination of a research drug I was taking being pulled from the market, along with increasing stress in my life culminated in a MS relapse in August 2005. It was at this point that I decided to finally do something for me, something that would improve my health.

Jennifer first believed in me, and now I believe in myself!  Jennifer started me on a consistent exercise regimen and then we started Choi training.  I am now progressing steadily up the belt ranks and I am in the best shape of my life. I feel better about myself and my walking and balance have both improved.  I have joined Jennifer and her husband, Bo, in establishing Choi2All and am now very excited about my future not just as a school owner but as a student on her way to becoming a Black Belt.

In every sense of the word, Choi Kwang Do has become a passion of mine and has monumentally changed my life.  If you had asked me one year ago, NEVER would I have even entertained the possibility of being a martial artist or being an extremely self-sufficient and self-assured individual.  I now walk with self-confidence and I think with self-confidence.  I know there is no cure at this time for MS, but I feel my health is steadily improving and I am determined to forge ahead and be the best CKD martial artist I can be.  My passion is to spread the benefits of Choi to as many people as possible through our school and to let others with disabilities know that they too can do something to help themselves both physically and mentally, thereby reclaiming their lives!!
